Freestyle Energy Announces Strategic Technology Alliance Partners
with Silver Spring Networks.

Freestyle Energy and Silver Spring Networks have agreed to work together to provide a flexible, interoperable, Smart Grid operating environment providing distributed intelligence throughout interconnected Smart Grids. The environment enables devices to operate automatically, for optimal energy management based on information available locally and from connected systems.

CEO’S ANNUAL REPORT

The 2008/09 financial year has seen us enter the commercialisation phase.  We have further implemented our value added strategy, while continuing to build potential value for shareholders.  This has been achieved by expanding the current opportunity from smart metering to Smart Grids.

The Company has moved from trials to integrating the Freestyle technology into a range of commercial devices that are attached to the electricity grid.  We have continued to enhance the value of the Freestyle Platform and establish strategic alliances and partnerships across a range of participants in the Australian and international energy industry.

Of particular importance has been the relationship with organisations in the electricity industry, especially Silver Spring Networks, Cisco Systems, Landis and Gyr and UXC.
In respect of the Victorian AIMRO the capability to retrospectively implement the Freestyle Platform to the majority of meters in Victoria has been confirmed.  We have also identified a number of further opportunities that involve the retail industry utilising the Freestyle Platform, which will directly benefit the consumer.

Freestyle has aligned with a major industry player to be part of a consortium to win the Smart Grid – Smart City $100m Federal Government grant.  We add considerable value to this project by supporting many different devices on the electricity network simultaneously, on a common platform.  The additional ability to connect existing legacy equipment to a smart grid with little or no interruption to the consumer further enhances our solution.
Trials have proved the benefits of the Freestyle Platform, such as its ability to support many different devices across a range of communication protocols.  This has provided the confidence that we can provide the solution that will be viewed favourably by all stakeholders in the industry.

While the Victorian roll-out and the $100m Federal Government grant offer the most immediate, large scale opportunities for the deployment of Freestyle enabled devices, there are other organisations in the wider electricity supply industry that are coming to appreciate the benefits that the Freestyle technical solution can bring to their businesses.  We will endeavour to convert these situations into long term revenue streams.

Our design engineers have developed applications that can control street lights, temperature sensors, in home displays and domestic appliances.  This facilitates an important rationale for the introduction of “smart grids” – the ability of many stakeholders to manage and control electricity usage across the grid.  Having this level of control allows for a future where the carbon emissions can be minimised using intelligent automatic energy management.

This new financial year will be an exciting time for the Company as its is expected that, after years of development, testing and trialling, the commercial potential of the Freestyle Platform will begin to be realised.
